Mission, Vision, and Beliefs

RvES Counseling Program Mission Statement:

The mission of the Riverview Elementary School Counseling Program is to create and maintain a school environment where all students feel comfortable, safe, and supported while learning and developing skills which promote academic confidence, college and career readiness, emotional and mental health, and integrity. The counseling program is directed by the school counselor(s) and supported by collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and community members.

RvES Counseling Program Vision:

It is the goal of the Riverview Elementary School Counseling Program that our students will be exemplary leaders in Service who take Pride in their work, have a can-do Attitude, demonstrate Respect for everyone, and show Kindness to all. Riverview students will carry their “SPARK” into upper grades education, college, and career experience.

RvES Counseling Program Beliefs:

  1. Every student has unlimited value and potential.

  2. Every student can benefit from counseling.

  3. Every student has the right to see the counselor when they are in need.

  4. The counselor should be a source of compassion, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faith in the hope for humanity, gentleness, and self-control for students and staff.

  5. The counselor should be genuine (Congruent) with students, engaging with them on a level that they can relate to.

  6. The counselor should accept students as they are rather than withholding approval based on conditional behavior (Unconditional Positive Regard).

  7. The counselor should communicate a desire to understand and appreciate the child’s perspective (Empathy) through their actions and words.

  8. The school counselor will keep information that students share with them during counseling sessions as confidential and will only share this information with parents, teachers, or administrators if the information constitutes a threat of harm for the student or someone else.

  9. RvES Student Explanation of Confidentiality: “Everything that you say to me will stay between you and me unless you or someone else is in danger. I will never discuss anything you say with your classmates or other students. If you tell me something that isn’t a secret I might mention it to your teacher (for example, if you tell me that you were sick last week I might let your teacher know that this is the reason you missed the field trip), but I will never tell them anything that you wouldn’t want me to tell them. I don’t keep secrets from parents unless it is very important to, but I will only talk to them if it is a serious situation.”
