Hello! My name is Jeremy Lavender and I am the School Counselor for Riverview Elementary.

At Riverview Elementary we have developed a comprehensive counseling program which facilitates student success and supports the academic, emotional, and social needs of all students. This program will provide students with opportunities to learn more about themselves and others through classroom guidance, small group counseling, and individual counseling. It will also support teachers and parents through parent/teacher meetings and Student Support Team meetings and provide resources and assistance.

Our guidance lessons explore topics about mental health, peer relationships, manners, self-concept, citizenship, personal safety, and career awareness. Younger students will learn to describe their feelings and behave appropriately in social settings, older students will develop problem solving and leadership skills, and our oldest students will learn advanced strategies for addressing the more serious mental health issues that they might encounter as they prepare for middle school like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. Some of these lessons were developed by me and others come from the “Riding the Waves” curriculum.

In addition to classroom guidance, students can meet with me individually to discuss personal issues that may be affecting them. I am also frequently available to check in with students in informal settings if that is what they feel more comfortable with.
